We have spend in total 7 nights in Kathmandu before and after our trek at Annapurna. Kathmandu is “Disneyland” for travellers. Especially us from the Western countries! Life is easy and comfortable. Everything you wish for or have missed is available. Most for a cheap price. Trekking equipment, caffe latte, burgers, white wine, laundry-service and even a super marked can be found in the Thamel district where most of the low budget tourists (like us) are living.
But the city also offers a lot of sightseeing like the old town including plenty of stupas and temples. Just walking the streets of Kathmandu gives you a feeling of an exotic and very busy city. Loads of traffic (and pollution) with motorbikes, bicycles, scooters, cars and mini-buses. Most of them blowing the horn every 30 sec! People selling straight from their bike or a small plastic bags placed on the road. Or from the many “hole in the wall” shops. All you can imagine from gold and jewellery to home made food, vegetables, shoes and dresses, meat, books and pens to clothes and of course plenty of tourist merchandise!
We can’t mention Kathmandu without mentioning DUST! Lots of dust from buildings under construction, damaged roads, ruined buildings after 2015 earthquake and simply poor maintenance of roads and buildings. It is all over. And everywhere. The Nepalese are using small brooms to “clean” …but they never remove the small pile of trash and dust. Just leaving it. In a few hours they can start all over agin. Amazing.
